Enid Mary Blyton (1897-1968), who also wrote as Mary Pollock, was a British children's writer and one of the most successful storytellers of the twentieth century. Born in South London in 1897, the eldest of three children, she showed an early interest in music and reading and thought she would become a musician until she realised that writing was her passion. Through the 1940s and 1950s she wrote at a colossal pace: adventure stories, mysteries, magical stories, farming stories and stories for younger children, including the Faraway Tree and Wishing-Chair series, the Famous Five and the Secret Seven. Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated more often than those of any other children's author. She lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and died on 28 November 1968.
