Erin Morgenstern was born July 8, 1978, and raised in Marshfield, Massachusetts. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, studying theater and studio art, and graduated in 2000. Beyond writing, Morgenstern is a multimedia artist who creates paintings in acrylics and designed the Phantomwise tarot deck. Before achieving publishing success, she faced significant rejection, having been turned down by thirty literary agents before signing with Inkwell Management in May 2010; she sold her debut novel to Doubleday later that year and subsequently relocated to New York City. Her debut novel, The Night Circus (2011), an atmospheric fantasy set in a mysterious traveling circus within a fantastical late nineteenth-century world, was published in more than thirty countries and spent seven weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list, establishing her as a major voice in literary fantasy. Her second novel, The Starless Sea (2019), interweaves romantic and mythic storytelling around a hidden underground library-world, further cementing her reputation for lushly atmospheric, richly imagined fiction. Morgenstern won the 2012 Locus Award for Best First Novel and the 2012 Alex Award from the American Library Association, both recognizing The Night Circus as an outstanding debut work that crossed over between adult and young-adult readerships.
