Graham Joyce (1954-2014) was an English writer of fantasy and supernatural fiction, born into a Coventry mining family. After working as a youth officer he left his job in 1988 and moved to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Crete to write his first novel, Dreamside (1991), about students who share a lucid dream that returns to haunt them; on selling it he returned to England as a full-time writer, settling in Leicester, and from 1996 he also taught creative writing at Nottingham Trent University. His novels moved from supernatural themes of witchcraft and reincarnation, as in Dark Sister (1992), towards a borderline-fantastic magic realism rooted in English working-class life, in The Tooth Fairy (1996), Indigo (1999), Smoking Poppy (2001), The Limits of Enchantment (2005), Some Kind of Fairy Tale (2012) and The Year of the Ladybird (2013). He won the British Fantasy Award several times and the French Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire, and The Facts of Life (2002) tied for the World Fantasy Award for best novel. He died of lymphoma in 2014.
