J. Robert King was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in northwestern Indiana; he has said he was inspired to become a writer in third grade after his teacher read The Chronicles of Narnia to his class. He majored in Theology and the Humanities at Valparaiso University, then worked two years as an editor for a non-fiction publisher before joining TSR as an editor, eventually transitioning to full-time novel writing by the late 1990s. His game-design credits include the Monstrous Compendium Forgotten Realms Appendix II (1991) and material for the Ravenloft and Dragonlance lines. As a novelist, King wrote the Ravenloft novels Heart of Midnight and Carnival of Fear, the Dragonlance novel Vinas Solamnus, and the Planescape Blood Wars trilogy, including Blood Hostages and Abyssal Warriors. He was also a prominent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering fiction line, writing Time Streams and the Phyrexian Cycle trilogy, and won the 1997 Origins Award for best game-related fiction for Planar Powers. Later he wrote an Arthurian trilogy—Mad Merlin, Lancelot du Lethe, and Le Morte D'Avalon—and the Guild Wars 2 tie-in novel Edge of Destiny, alongside children's titles Rogues to Riches and Summerhill Hounds. He also publishes non-fantasy fiction under the name John R. King.
