James Wyatt grew up in Ithaca, New York, graduating from Ithaca High School in 1986, and began playing Dungeons & Dragons in the late 1970s with the Basic Set, later recalling that he remembered "pretending to be a wizard in my backyard" as a child. He earned a Religion degree from Oberlin College in 1990 and a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1993, becoming an ordained United Methodist minister in 1994 and serving two small churches in southeastern Ohio; he was later ordained an Episcopal priest in June 2025, serving as Vicar of Faith Episcopal Poulsbo. Wyatt joined Wizards of the Coast in January 2000 and became one of the company's most influential designers, writing roughly two-thirds of the Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn, co-designing Oriental Adventures (2001) and the Eberron Campaign Setting (2004), and contributing to the fourth-edition Dungeon Master's Guide. He later served as lead designer on Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica (2018) and co-lead on Mythic Odysseys of Theros (2020). As a novelist he wrote the Eberron-set novels In the Claws of the Tiger (2006), Storm Dragon (2007), Dragon Forge (2008), Dragon War (2009), and Oath of Vigilance (2011). He has won two Origins Awards (2003, 2005) and an ENnie Award (2002) for Oriental Adventures.
