Jenna Helland worked for many years as a writer and, later, a principal designer for Wizards of the Coast, where she helped shape the storyline and worldbuilding for numerous Magic: The Gathering card sets, contributing across the game's expansive multiverse from the Shards of Alara block through the Wilds of Eldraine expansion. In that role she was responsible for developing the narrative and lore underpinning entire plane settings within the game, work that directly informed her tie-in fiction. Her published novels include The August Five, a Magic: The Gathering story exploring rebellion and political unrest on the plane of Ravnica, and Theros: Godsend, set on the Greek-mythology-inspired plane of Theros that she helped design as principal worldbuilder. She later co-authored Magic: The Gathering: The Official Cookbook: Cuisines of the Multiverse with Victoria Rosenthal, extending her creative involvement with the franchise into a licensed nonfiction format blending recipes with in-universe lore. Helland's career illustrates the close relationship between game design and tie-in fiction at Wizards of the Coast, where writers frequently moved between worldbuilding for the collectible card game itself and authoring standalone novels set within those same worlds. She resides in the Pacific Northwest with her family, continuing to write within and around the Magic: The Gathering multiverse she helped construct.
