L. Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author best known for creating the Land of Oz. Born in Chittenango, New York, he was tutored at home in childhood and attended Peekskill Military Academy for two years before returning home due to poor health. Before finding success as a novelist, Baum pursued a remarkably varied career: he worked in theater as a playwright and performer, ran a retail store in South Dakota, edited the newspaper The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer, and worked as a Chicago newspaper reporter. In 1897 he founded and edited The Show Window, a trade magazine on retail window-display techniques, drawing on his theatrical eye for spectacle. His breakthrough came with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), which he followed with fourteen more Oz novels during his lifetime, alongside 41 other novels, more than 83 short stories, and over 200 poems, some published under pseudonyms such as Edith Van Dyne and Laura Bancroft. In 1914 he founded The Oz Film Manufacturing Company, serving as its president and principal producer, extending his storytelling into early cinema. Baum died in Los Angeles in 1919. He was posthumously inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame in 2013, and the 1939 MGM film adaptation of his most famous book became a landmark of twentieth-century cinema.
