Lord Dunsany, born Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett in London on July 24, 1878, was the 18th Baron Dunsany, a title within one of Ireland's oldest peerages. Raised at family estates including Dunsany Castle in County Meath, he was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Beyond writing, Dunsany was a decorated soldier who served in the Boer War and both World Wars and was wounded during the 1916 Easter Rising; he was also a champion chess player, the pistol-shooting champion of Ireland, and inventor of an asymmetrical chess variant. As a writer, Dunsany was extraordinarily prolific, publishing more than 90 books alongside hundreds of short stories, plays, and essays, achieving his greatest literary fame during the 1910s. His early collection The Gods of Pegāna (1905) established an invented pantheon and mythology that helped originate the modern fantasy genre, while his novel The King of Elfland's Daughter (1924) is widely regarded as his masterpiece and a foundational work of high fantasy. His novel The Curse of the Wise Woman won the Harmsworth Literary Award, and Trinity College Dublin awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1940; he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, though he did not win. Dunsany's ornate, mythic prose profoundly shaped later fantasy writers, with H. P. Lovecraft, J. R. R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Neil Gaiman all acknowledging his influence on their work.
