Margaret Mahy (1936-2012) was a New Zealand author of children's and young adult fiction, one of the country's most celebrated writers, with more than 150 titles translated into many languages. Many of her books combine strong supernatural elements with close attention to family relationships and growing up, and her novels have been translated into languages from German and Japanese to Catalan and Afrikaans. She was the fourth writer to win the Carnegie Medal twice, for The Haunting (1982) and The Changeover (1984), and she received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the international children's literature prize. She was appointed to the Order of New Zealand, the country's highest honour, in 1993.
