Mary L. Kirchoff is an American editor and author born in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, who earned a B.A. in English from Lawrence University. She joined TSR, Inc. in 1982 as editor of Polyhedron magazine and rose through the company to become Vice President of Marketing, Publishing, and Tabletop Games at Wizards of the Coast, departing in December 2004 before serving as Chief Marketing Officer at 38 Studios. As an author, Kirchoff wrote multiple Dragonlance novels, including Wanderlust, Flint the King, and Kendermore, and the Defenders of Magic trilogy, and she co-created the Dark Sun campaign setting with designers Troy Denning and Tim Brown, one of the more distinctive and atmospheric settings published for Dungeons & Dragons. Her published fiction has been translated into more than nine languages, and she has noted that virtually every book published under the Dragonlance line during her tenure hit major bestseller lists, reflecting the franchise's extraordinary commercial success in the 1980s and 1990s. Kirchoff married fellow TSR staffer and designer Steve Winter in September 1985, following an earlier marriage to Mark Hamilton. Her dual career as both editor and novelist gave her an unusually broad influence over the direction and tone of the Dragonlance line during its formative years.
