Murray J. D. Leeder built two parallel careers: one as a published fiction writer contributing early tie-in fiction to TSR's Forgotten Realms line, and a second, more extensive career as an academic film scholar. He has held teaching positions in film and media studies at several Canadian universities, including as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of English, Film, Theatre and Media at the University of Manitoba and, more recently, as an Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts' English & Film Studies Department at the University of Alberta, where he teaches courses including an introduction to film study and a course on horror-genre archetypes titled "Monsters, Slashers and Ghosts." As a scholar he has published extensively on horror cinema and the supernatural in early film, authoring the book Horror Film: A Critical Introduction, and has contributed academic writing examining how science-fiction media, including Star Trek, engages with human-rights themes such as genocide, migration, and refugee crises, in work co-written with Alana Conway for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Leeder's dual career, moving from genre tie-in fiction in his earlier years to peer-reviewed film scholarship, gives him an unusual vantage point bridging popular fantasy fandom and academic media studies, and his horror-film scholarship in particular draws on a longstanding personal engagement with genre fiction and its cultural history.
