Pamela Collins Dean Dyer-Bennet was born in 1953 and is an American fantasy author. She graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1975, an institution that later inspired the setting of her most famous novel. She married fellow science fiction fan David Dyer-Bennet on December 30, 1982. Dean has published six novels and numerous short stories over her career. She was a member of The Scribblies, an influential Minneapolis writing group that also included Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, and Steven Brust, and she contributed to the Liavek shared-world anthology series; she is also a member of the Pre-Joycean Fellowship. Her best-known novel, Tam Lin (1991), is set on a midwestern college campus loosely based on her alma mater, Carleton College, and reworks the traditional Scottish ballad of the same name into a campus fantasy. She also wrote The Secret Country trilogy (1985–1989) and The Dubious Hills (1994). Both Tam Lin and The Dubious Hills received nominations for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, in 1992 and 1995 respectively. Dean's work is noted for its literary density, careful allusion to folklore and classic literature, and richly drawn character relationships.
