Pedro Galvão is a Portuguese author and academic who writes speculative fiction alongside a career in philosophy. He is a professor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches Ethics and Modern Philosophy, and has received Portugal's Prize for Scientific and Technical Translation for translating eighteenth- and nineteenth-century philosophical prose. Galvão has said he was drawn to philosophy in part to "nurture the imagination with materials that one day would result in speculative fiction," directly linking his academic and literary pursuits. His debut novel, A Última Vida de Sir David ("The Last Life of Sir David", 2020), is a 368-page fantasy novel illustrated by Nuno Dias, set in the invented world of Onyria. It follows Sir David, an aging adventurer who takes on the education of Prince Venrik of Alamkar after the kingdom's king disappears, only to be drawn once more into Onyria's mortal dangers, illusions, and unprecedented magic during what he had expected to be his seventh and final life. Described as a fantasy work with "a rebellious personality and philosophical inclination," the novel was released online in May 2020 and was regarded as one of the major Portuguese-language speculative fiction launches of that year.
