Peter Archer worked for many years as an editor and publishing executive at Wizards of the Coast, where he held the role of Director of Publishing. In that capacity he was responsible for explaining the company's decision to publish an early series of Dungeons & Dragons paperback novels under the collective pseudonym T. H. Lain rather than crediting the nine individual authors who actually wrote them; Archer stated the choice was made so the books would be shelved together on store shelves and to generate curiosity and speculation about the mysterious author's true identity, a rare piece of insight into Wizards of the Coast's publishing strategy during the early 2000s. Beyond his editorial work, Archer was also a contributing author in his own right: he was one of five credited authors and editors, alongside Harold Johnson, Steve Winter, Peter Adkison, and Ed Stark, on 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons (2004), a retrospective volume issued by Wizards of the Coast to mark the game's thirtieth anniversary. Archer additionally wrote for the Magic: The Gathering fiction line, authoring the anthology Rath and Storm, part of the Magic Anthologies series, further connecting his editorial career to hands-on tie-in writing across two of Wizards of the Coast's flagship properties.
