Roger E. Moore was born July 11, 1955, in Winchester, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky, initially majoring in Astronomy before switching to Psychology, and later pursued doctoral studies in Experimental Psychology at the University of Louisville. He served in the U.S. Army as a mental health counselor at Fort Bragg and in Mannheim, West Germany, receiving the Army Commendation Medal during his five-year tour. Moore joined TSR, Inc. as a magazine editor in May 1983, became the founding editor of Dungeon Adventures magazine in 1986, and that same year succeeded Kim Mohan as Editor-in-Chief of Dragon magazine, crediting both Mohan and Pat Price for shaping his editorial skills. In 1993 he moved into TSR's games division as creative director for the AD&D core rules. When Wizards of the Coast acquired TSR in 1997 he joined the new company, remaining until late 2000. Among his notable published works are The Maelstrom's Eye (1992), Return of the Eight (1998), Errand of Mercy (1998), and Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins (1998), the last of which won the 1998 Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Supplement. Moore's long tenure shaping Dragon and Dungeon magazines made him one of the most influential editorial voices in Dungeons & Dragons publishing history.
