Saad Z. Hossain is a Bangladeshi novelist writing in English, born and based in Dhaka, which he calls the most ridiculously crowded city in the world. He writes in a self-described niche of fantasy, science fiction and black comedy. His first novel, the war satire Escape from Baghdad! (first published in Bangladesh as Baghdad Immortals in 2013, then by Unnamed Press in 2015), was among the Financial Times's best books of 2015. Djinn City (2017), a darkly comic fantasy set in Dhaka and the realm of the djinn, was followed by the novella The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday (Tor.com, 2019), the sequel Cyber Mage (2021) and the novella Kundo Wakes Up (2022), building one shared world of alternate djinn history and futures. His short fiction has appeared in anthologies including The Djinn Falls in Love and The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year.
