Sarah Porter is an American author of young adult fantasy fiction best known for the Lost Voices Trilogy, comprising Lost Voices, Waking Storms, and The Twice Lost, a dark reimagining of mermaid mythology in which lost and abandoned girls are transformed into dangerous sea creatures. She also wrote Vassa in the Night, a fantasy retelling of the Russian folktale of Baba Yaga transposed to a surreal, contemporary Brooklyn. Porter has spent over a decade teaching creative writing workshops in New York City public schools to students from kindergarten through tenth grade, work that has informed her attentiveness to teenage voice and experience in her fiction. Alongside writing, she has built a career as a professional VJ, performing visual art both independently and with the collective Fort/Da at prominent venues including Roseland, Galapagos, Tonic, Joe's Pub, the Hammerstein Ballroom, the Nokia Theater, and Burning Man. This background in live visual performance has informed the vivid, immersive imagery that characterizes her prose. Porter lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and two cats, and continues to write fantasy fiction for teen and adult readers that blends folklore, myth, and contemporary urban settings.
