Seth Dickinson is an American writer of fantasy and science fiction who graduated from the University of Chicago, where he received the Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing in 2011 for his short story "The Immaculate Conception of Private Ritter." Alongside his fiction career, he works as a narrative designer and writer for video games, with credits including Destiny: The Taken King and Subnautica 2, and he has also contributed to Magic: The Gathering projects. Dickinson's debut novel, The Traitor Baru Cormorant (2015), introduced a politically intricate, morally complex epic centered on economic warfare and colonial subjugation, and launched The Masquerade series, continuing with The Monster Baru Cormorant (2018) and The Tyrant Baru Cormorant (2020). The series is noted for its unflinching examination of empire, sacrifice, and the psychological cost of resistance from within an oppressive system. He later published the science fiction novel Exordia (2024). Beyond his novels, Dickinson has placed numerous short stories in prestigious speculative fiction venues including Clarkesworld, Strange Horizons, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies, establishing himself as a distinctive voice known for combining rigorous worldbuilding with sharp, uncompromising moral and political inquiry.
