Sheri S. Tepper was born Shirley Stewart Douglas on July 16, 1929, near Littleton, Colorado, and grew up reading science fiction and fantasy classics by authors including A. Merritt, C. S. Lewis, and Frank Baum, books she said she "went back to again and again." She spent ten years working various jobs as a single mother of two, including a position with the international relief organization CARE, before working for Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood from 1962 to 1986, eventually serving as executive director. She initially wrote poetry and children's stories under the name Sheri S. Eberhart before a hiatus; her professional publishing debut as a novelist came remarkably late, after she turned 50. From the mid-1980s she became prolific across multiple genres, also writing mysteries as A. J. Orde and B. J. Oliphant and horror as E. E. Horlak. She is best known for feminist science fiction exploring sociology, gender, ecology, and theology, earning her the label "eco-feminist," though she preferred "eco-humanist." Major works include The Gate to Women's Country (1988), Grass (1989), Beauty (1991), The Family Tree (1997), and The Margarets (2007). She won the Locus Award for Beauty in 1992 and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2015. She died October 22, 2016, at age 87 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
