Steve Winter is an American game designer and writer born December 8, 1957, in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended Catholic schools before completing two years at a Catholic college and transferring to Iowa State University in Ames, where he majored in journalism, briefly working afterward as a city desk reporter at the Peoria Journal-Star. Winter joined TSR, Inc. as a Games Editor in May 1981 and was promoted to Manager of Game Editors in 1984, later working as a producer for Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons & Dragons websites until his departure on December 14, 2011. As an editor he worked on Star Frontiers, Gangbusters, the 1983 revision of the World of Greyhawk setting, and the Top Secret Companion, and as a designer he contributed to Ruins of Adventure, The Complete Psionics Handbook, the third-edition Monster Manual II, and Lords of Madness. He co-designed the Marvel Super Heroes RPG with Jeff Grubb and co-wrote the Dragonlance novel Wanderlust with his wife, Mary Kirchoff, whom he married in September 1985. Winter's long tenure at TSR and Wizards of the Coast made him one of the most consistently active designers and editors across the formative decades of Dungeons & Dragons and its associated Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms tie-in fiction.
