Victor Woodward Milán was an American writer born August 3, 1954, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and known for libertarian-inflected science fiction and a deep interest in cybernetics. He died February 13, 2018, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a battle with cancer. For years he served as the longtime master of ceremonies for the masquerade ball at Archon, a multi-genre convention in Collinsville, Illinois, reflecting his deep ties to fandom. Milán won the Prometheus Award in 1986 for Cybernetic Samurai, and over his career authored nearly a hundred novels and numerous short stories across many genres and shared universes. He wrote extensively under pseudonyms: as Richard Austin for the 15-book Guardians series (1985-1990), as Robert Baron for the Stormrider series (1992-1993), as S.L. Hunter for the Donovan Steele duology (1991), and as Alex Archer for entries in the Rogue Angel series (2006-2007); he also contributed to the James Axler house-name Deathlands and Outlanders lines. His other credits include BattleTech novels, Star Trek: The Original Series tie-in fiction, and contributions to the Wild Cards shared-universe anthology series, alongside Forgotten Realms novels. Late in his career he returned to original fantasy with The Dinosaur Lords trilogy (2015-2017), a series blending epic fantasy with dinosaur-mounted warfare that introduced him to a new generation of readers.
