Yoon Ha Lee was born on 26 January 1979 in Houston, Texas, and is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy. He attended Seoul Foreign School for high school, studied mathematics at Cornell University, and earned a master's degree in secondary mathematics education at Stanford University. He has worked as an analyst for an energy market intelligence company, as a web designer and as a math teacher. He has published short fiction since his first sale in 1999, in magazines including The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Clarkesworld and Lightspeed, and in 2012 wrote the browser-based text adventure Winterstrike for Failbetter Games. His adult space opera trilogy Machineries of Empire began with Ninefox Gambit (2017). He also wrote the middle-grade Thousand Worlds books, beginning with Dragon Pearl (2019), and the young adult novels Moonstorm (2024) and Starstrike (2025).
