Synopsis
Anubis is born without a known father and, according to Tuareg legend, sets out into the Sahara to find him. Over his life he moves between rejecting and accepting the laws of his tribe and the desert, and suffers at each stage. Spectral, priest-like apparitions and jinn speak to him in riddles and prophecy, and the legendary lost oasis of Targa lies in the background. In time he becomes a mild leader, only for his own son to repeat the search for a missing father. The book also looks at the duties between parents and children, siblings, and men and women.
