Synopsis

A Fish Dinner in Memison, published by E.R. Eddison in 1941, continues the Zimiamvia sequence, weaving together two parallel narratives. One follows Edward Lessingham and his wife Mary in an early twentieth-century England, their conversations and daily life quietly echoing themes explored more fully elsewhere in the book. The other, set in the parallel world of Zimiamvia itself, follows King Mezentius in the years before the events chronicled in Mistress of Mistresses, tracing the political intrigue and romance surrounding his court and his relationship with the Duchess Amalie of Zayana. The novel's centerpiece is a leisurely fish dinner at Memison that gradually opens into a wide-ranging philosophical conversation, through which the mysterious correspondences between the Earth and Zimiamvian halves of the narrative are gradually, if never completely, illuminated.

Notes

  • From the series record (Zimiamvia): Core Canon: the 2 Zimiamvian novels Eddison completed in his lifetime. Internal chronology (per Wikipedia) runs in reverse of publication order relative to the Expanded Canon's The Mezentian Gate (earliest events) -- internal chronology values reflect story order, not publication order; not resolved further.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
