Synopsis

Set in twelfth-century China amid the conflict between the Jin and Song empires, A Hero Born opens with two families whose fates become entangled after a Taoist priest names their unborn sons and a subsequent attack by a Jin prince forces the survivors apart. Guo Jing, one of the two boys, grows up far from home on the Mongolian steppe under the protection of Genghis Khan's forces, slowly developing his martial arts skill despite being considered slow-witted by his teachers. As he comes of age, Guo Jing eventually travels south toward his ancestral homeland, where he meets Huang Rong, the clever and strong-willed daughter of a renowned and eccentric martial artist.

Where it sits

  • Universe: The Condor Trilogy
  • Series: Legends of the Condor Heroes (English translation) core; position 1 of 4 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Jin Yong

Notes

  • From the series record (Legends of the Condor Heroes (English translation)): Core Canon: the four-volume English translation (MacLehose Press, translated by Anna Holmwood, Gigi Chang, and Shelly Bryant) of the wuxia novel Jin Yong originally serialized in Hong Kong Commercial Daily from 1957-1959. This is the first novel of the wider Condor Trilogy; its two sequels (The Return of the Condor Heroes, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber) are a separate continuity not yet catalogued and are a future candidate on their own merits.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
