Synopsis
A Scattering of Jades is set in New York City and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, in the late 1830s, and follows Archie Prescott, a printer for the New York Herald who lost his wife and daughter in a tenement fire years earlier. When a maimed young beggar girl appears claiming to be his long-lost daughter, Archie is drawn into a mystery over how she could possibly have survived and where she has been in the intervening years. The investigation entangles him with real historical figures of the period, including Mammoth Cave explorer Stephen Bishop, showman P. T. Barnum, and the Tammany Hall political machine, while strange and increasingly supernatural occurrences point toward a far older threat: an attempt by ancient Aztec gods to force their way back into the world through the underground passages beneath Kentucky.
