Synopsis

A Snake Falls to Earth follows Nina, a Lipan Apache girl living in a near-future Texas increasingly reshaped by climate change, who becomes determined to uncover her family's fading, half-remembered connection to the Reflecting World, a realm tied to Lipan Apache storytelling that her relatives no longer fully understand. In a parallel thread, Oli, a cottonmouth snake shapeshifter native to that same magical dimension, navigates his own world as its stability comes under threat from the same environmental crisis affecting Nina's Texas. As the two worlds edge closer together and climate change endangers both, Nina and Oli's paths cross, drawing them into a shared effort to understand what is happening and to protect the people and places each of them cares about.

Awards (verified)

  • Andre Norton Award, 2021: won; Confirmed directly via nebulas.sfwa.org's own Andre Norton Award winners list, which labels the award by the eligible work's publication year (2021), matching this project's existing year-labeling convention for SFWA-administered awards.

Notes

  • From the series record (A Snake Falls to Earth (novel)): A standalone fantasy grounded in Lipan Apache storytelling, told across 2 intersecting realms: the human world, where 16-year-old Nina lives, and the 'Reflecting World,' a supernatural dimension of spirits and animal-people including Oli, a shapeshifting cottonmouth-snake boy. Confirmed via Wikipedia as a separate setting from Elatsoe (admitted separately this same run), not a shared continuity. Registered as a single-work universe (LOTR-analogy convention).
