Synopsis
Twelve-year-old Felicity Juniper Pickle and her family have moved around all her life, and now she, her little sister Frannie Jo and their mother arrive in Midnight Gulch, Tennessee, the mother's hometown. The town was once famous for its magic, but a curse laid down generations ago has drained it away, and local people keep their remaining gifts quiet. Felicity has her own odd talent: she sees words floating around people, words that reveal what they are really thinking. She hopes to settle down at last and make a friend. She meets Jonah, a boy with a secret magic of his own, and together they are drawn into the town's old talent contest, the Duel, as they try to find the curse's source and win back Midnight Gulch's magic.
