Synopsis
Our world has long been protected by the Ring, a benevolent secret society of witches and magicians who quietly set things right, and lately they have had a lot to set right: the Ring's elders discover that the celibate mages of Arth, a fortress-citadel in a neighbouring universe, have been spying on Earth for centuries, stealing its ideas and inventions, and manufacturing its wars, plagues and even global warming as experiments to see how humanity copes. The Ring's answer is to assemble a strike force of women, a shipload of witches with orders to disrupt the citadel of Arth by every means available, including seduction, and send them through the gap between the worlds in a magical bus. Among them is the ordinary, unmagical Zillah and her baby son, and the chaos they bring to the monkish rulers of Arth, and to the pirate-ridden world beyond it, spirals in every direction.
