Synopsis

Meg Murry, now fourteen, is anxious about her younger brother Charles Wallace, a six-year-old prodigy who is being bullied at their school, whose new principal, Mr. Jenkins, is the same man who once disciplined Meg. When Charles Wallace falls mysteriously and progressively ill with breathing trouble, their microbiologist mother suspects a malfunction among the farandolae, tiny organelles that inhabit his mitochondria. Meg is joined again by Calvin O'Keefe, a popular but quietly unhappy sixteen-year-old who finds a sense of belonging with the Murry family, and the two encounter Proginoskes, a cherubim made of countless wings and eyes. A teacher named Blajeny recruits the group to confront the Echthroi, a malevolent force manifesting on Earth as hatred and destruction, which is preventing Charles Wallace's farandolae from maturing; to save him, Meg must first learn to tell the real Mr.

Notes

  • From the series record (Time Quintet): The five-book Time Quintet: A Wrinkle in Time and its direct sequels, following the Murry and O'Keefe children across cosmic/time travel adventures. This project treats the whole quintet as Core Canon; L'Engle's separately-continuitied O'Keefe family novels (e.g. The Arm of the Starfish, Dragons in the Waters), which share some characters but are spy/thriller fiction rather than fantasy, are out of scope and not catalogued here.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
