Synopsis
Wira is wild with worry: her beloved husband Hugo, son of the Good Magician Humfrey, has vanished from his cellar on the very night they planned to start a family, and a murdered man has been left in his place. Humfrey's Book of Answers proves hopelessly scrambled, leaving only vague clues, while far across Xanth Hugo finds himself imprisoned in the dungeon of Castle Maidragon. As the two set out to find each other, their quests become entwined with some of Xanth's most unusual denizens: Debra, a thirteen-year-old Mundane girl hoping to lift an obnoxious curse on her name, turned into a flying centaur; Happy and Fray, two storm-spirits; Nimbus, the Demon Xanth's own son; Ilene, daughter of the Magician Trent; and the mysterious outlaw known as the Random Factor. Their journeys reveal that they are players in a game older than Xanth itself. The thirty-first Xanth novel, structured as a murder mystery.
