Synopsis
In the third novel, Lucifer has left Heaven, leaving behind a power vacuum that the ambitious, malevolent Mason moves to fill by trying to muster a demonic army for an all-out war on Heaven. James Stark, part angel himself, is pulled from every side by scheming angels, demons and the monstrous Kissi, each trying to use him to further their own plans for the coming conflict. To find a way to stop Mason before the fighting can begin, Stark chooses to go back down into Hell, this time on a rescue mission for his dead girlfriend rather than a mission of vengeance, in a journey that echoes old myths of the underworld. Hell itself, as Stark experiences it, turns out to resemble his own Los Angeles on an especially bad day, forcing him to fight through a landscape that is grimly, uncomfortably familiar.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
