Synopsis
Among Others, published by Jo Walton in 2011, is set in 1979 and 1980 and follows Morwenna, a disabled Welsh teenager sent to live with her estranged father's family after a magical confrontation involving her unstable, dangerous mother leaves her twin sister dead. Uprooted from Wales and enrolled at an unfamiliar English boarding school, Morwenna finds herself isolated among classmates who share none of her background or interests, and turns increasingly to books, particularly science fiction and fantasy, and to the fairies only she can perceive, for comfort and companionship. As she navigates the ordinary difficulties of adolescence alongside the lingering trauma of what happened to her sister and the ongoing, unresolved threat posed by her mother, Morwenna must decide how much of her private, magical inner life she can safely share with anyone around her.
