Synopsis
Years after the events at Machi, the story reunites an older cast, the poet Maati Vaupathai, his former lover Liat Chokavi, the mercenary captain Sinja, and Otah, now ruling as Khai Machi, as a new and more existential threat emerges from the rival Galtic Empire. General Balasar Gice, convinced that the andat, the bound spirits that give the Khaiem cities their power and prosperity, pose an intolerable danger to humanity, has built an army and a plan meant to eliminate the andat system once and for all. As Gice's campaign advances against cities that have never faced a true military threat before, the characters are forced to confront changes to their world that go far beyond anything any of them had previously imagined, testing old loyalties and uneasy peace alike.

Notes
- From the series record (The Long Price Quartet): Core Canon = all 4 novels of the completed quartet (Tor Books, 2006-2009). No companion/Expanded Canon material found. Later 2-in-1 omnibus editions (Shadow and Betrayal; Seasons of War) repackage the same 4 texts, not new works, per this project's standing edition-vs-work distinction.
