Synopsis
In 1533, in an alternate Italy where the Italian states form a federation led by Florence and have already colonized the New World, the poet Ludovico Ariosto serves the ruler Damiano de' Medici. An English embassy, including Thomas More, unsettles the smaller states, and Ariosto discovers that a traitor is working to ruin Damiano's currency. To escape the intrigue he dreams a fantasy in which he is a heroic ambassador in the New World, riding a hippogriff to help the Cerocchi people resist the sorcerer Anatrecacciatore. The two stories begin to mirror one another as the politics of Florence tighten.
