Synopsis
Atlan picks up after the events of The Serpent, with Cija now married to Zerd, who has completed his conquest of the hidden continent of Atlan and taken the throne as its emperor, making her empress at his side. The marriage is loveless: Zerd is repeatedly unfaithful, and Cija bears two children, Nal and Seka, amid mounting suspicion over the paternity of one of them. Palace intrigue, assassination attempts and bandit attacks threaten Cija directly, while a mad scientist and other schemers work against the new regime. The precarious peace is further shattered when Sedili, Zerd's former wife, leads a Northern army in an invasion aimed at reclaiming power, forcing Cija to navigate both a crumbling marriage and a kingdom under renewed threat of war.
