Synopsis
Audition for the Fox, a 2025 novella, follows Nesi, an underachieving acolyte serving a trickster Fox god who challenges her to prove her worth by saving her own ancestors rather than herself. To meet this challenge, Nesi is sent three hundred years into the past, bound in chains as a mark of her uncertain standing, and must find a way to work with the people of that earlier era despite her unfamiliar circumstances. Her mission draws her into conflict with the followers of Wolf, a rival and monstrous deity whose influence threatens the very lineage Nesi has been sent back to protect. As Nesi navigates an unfamiliar past and forges uneasy alliances with ancestors who do not know what she represents to their future, she must reconcile her own doubts about her worthiness with the responsibility the Fox god has placed on her.
