Synopsis
Beneath the Sugar Sky centers on Sumi, a student who once lived in Confection, a nonsensical world built entirely from candy and sweets, whose story intersects with a new crisis at Eleanor West's school. When a figure connected to Sumi's own unfinished fate arrives unexpectedly at the school seeking help, the novella brings together several characters familiar from the earlier books in the series, drawing them into a journey back toward Confection to try to set right something that was left incomplete by events beyond their control. The story continues the series' pattern of exploring how each world's particular logic and rules shape the students who once called it home.

- From the series record (Wayward Children): Core Canon = all 11 published novellas (Tor.com/Tordotcom, 2016-2026), per the collection/short-form-as-Core precedent (this series' primary reading unit has always been the novella, not the novel). Book 12, "A Song of Sugar Sparrows" (planned January 2027), is announced but unpublished as of 2026-08-11 -- isn't counted here yet; watch for its publication.
