Synopsis
Between Two Fires is set in medieval France during the years of the Black Death. Thomas, a disgraced knight turned brigand, rescues a young girl named Delphine from an assault and learns she claims the ability to perceive angels. She insists he escort her first to Paris and then to Avignon, and the pair is soon joined by Father Matthieu, a priest wrestling with his own doubts. Their journey unfolds against a plague-ravaged landscape where Lucifer and the other fallen angels have begun a new war against Heaven, and the travelers repeatedly encounter demonic forces along the road. As they near Avignon, Delphine discloses a further, more urgent purpose to their journey, tied to fears that the Pope himself has been replaced by a demon, weaving questions of faith, redemption and why God permits such suffering through the unfolding story.
