Synopsis
Twelve-year-old Ziva lives in Khazaria, the Jewish empire of the steppe, about twelve hundred years ago. Her twin brother Pesah has leprosy, and she is the only person in the family willing to go near him or help with the amputations his illness requires. When Pesah has a vision, the two set out on a journey toward Byzantium, hoping to find a cure for him or to confront the Angel of Death himself. Along the way they meet figures from Jewish folklore, including a sheyd, a kind of demon, and the Angel of Death, who debates mortality with Ziva. While Pesah faces his fate calmly, Ziva struggles with grief and anger as she tries to accept what may be coming.
