Synopsis
Dor, a twelve-year-old magician and the heir apparent to Xanth's throne, is sent by the Good Magician Humfrey into Xanth's past, eight hundred years before his own time, to find the legendary Zombie Master and learn the secret of a resurrection elixir needed to save someone in the present. Transported into the body of an invading Mundanian barbarian in that earlier era, Dor must navigate a past Xanth unfamiliar to him, aided by a giant spider named Jumper, while trying to complete his mission without disrupting history. His journey also intersects with the unfinished construction of Castle Roogna and a looming battle between goblins and harpies that threatens the era he has been thrown into.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Xanth, the original trilogy: position 3 of 3: previous The Source of Magic (1979)
- Internal chronology, within Xanth: position 3 of 33: previous The Source of Magic (1979) · next Centaur Aisle (1981)
