Synopsis
Children of Earth and Sky is set in a world drawing on Renaissance-era Europe, in the aftermath of the decline of the great city of Sarantium, as Jaddite states weakened by plague face the expanding power of the Osmanli empire. The novel follows several interlocking figures whose journeys intersect: Danica Gradek, a skilled archer and warrior seeking to recover her brother after his abduction by Osmanli raiders; Pero Villani, an ambitious young painter commissioned to travel east and paint the Osmanli khalif; Leonora Valeri, a woman with her own hidden ties who is sent along under the pretense of accompanying Pero; and Marin, a merchant from the trading city of Dubrava who guides part of the group through dangerous territory. As their paths diverge on the road eastward, personal rivalries and survival bonds form against a backdrop of mounting tension between the Jaddite world and the Osmanli empire.
