Synopsis

Children of Virtue and Vengeance picks up after magic has been restored to Orisha at the close of Children of Blood and Bone, as the kingdom descends into chaos in the aftermath. Queen Nehanda, now wielding formidable magical power of her own, seizes greater control and hunts Princess Amari, while Zélie works alongside the rebel maji faction known as the Iyika to build a sanctuary protecting their people and to help secure Amari's rightful claim to the throne. Tensions rise between the newly empowered maji and the monarchy, and further strain emerges within Zélie's own circle as differing views on strategy, and her own desire for vengeance against Prince Inan, threaten to fracture the fragile alliance holding the rebellion together.

Notes

  • From the series record (Legacy of Orisha): New author record. A completed West African/Yoruba-mythology-inspired YA trilogy, one of the best-selling YA fantasy debuts of its decade. Children of Blood and Bone's audiobook won the 2019 Audie Award for Best Audiobook (Fantasy) and was a Kirkus Prize finalist -- both are adaptation/format-specific honors for the audio edition and the book's own critical reception, not a genre fiction award for the prose text itself, so noted here in prose rather than registered as an `AWD-####` row; no Hugo/Nebula/World Fantasy/Locus/British Fantasy recognition was found for any of the 3 books.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
