Synopsis
Nick Kippax is a jaded food and drink authority living in near-future London. In a special-collections library he finds a medieval cookbook with a recipe for the mythical crandolin and, beside it, an alluring stain. He tastes the stain and vanishes. What follows is his long adventure across time and place, through quests, confectionery secrets and clashes between cosmic forces. The journey takes him through medieval Central Asia and Gorbachev-era Russia, among maidens in towers, a donkey and birth-marked Soviet statesmen. The story mixes food, music, science, superstition, railways and bladder-pipes.
