Synopsis

The ninth anthology in the Valdemar short-fiction series, edited by Mercedes Lackey, brings together stories told from a range of perspectives within the kingdom, including Heralds, people never Chosen by a Companion, and even animals who share in the world's magic. As with the other anthologies in the line, Lackey contributes original material alongside more than a dozen other authors, continuing the series' practice of mixing new characters with figures and miniseries carried over from earlier volumes. The stories are independent of one another rather than forming a single plot, and together they widen the view of Valdemar's society by showing how its magic and its order of protectors touch lives beyond the Heralds themselves, from ordinary townsfolk to the creatures bonded to the land.
