Synopsis
Deep Secret is set across a multiverse divided between magic-friendly Ayeward worlds and the mundane Nayward worlds that include Earth, and opens with Rupert Venables, a junior Magid responsible for overseeing both Earth and the unstable, magic-rich Koryfonic Empire. When the empire's Emperor and Earth's own senior Magid both die unexpectedly, Rupert is left needing to identify and train a replacement from a shortlist of ordinary human candidates. He arranges to observe them together at a science-fiction convention held at the Hotel Babylon in the town of Wantchester, among them a reluctant, sharp-tongued young woman named Maree Mallory, who has come with her uncle Ted, aunt Janine and young cousin Nick.
