Synopsis

Athanasius Pernath is a gem cutter and restorer of old objects who lives in the Jewish quarter of Prague. The legend of the Golem, a man-made being created long ago by Rabbi Loew, still lingers in the narrow streets, and it is said to return every few decades. One day Pernath is asked to repair a rare book, and a strange visitor leaves his mind almost at once, though the meeting begins to take hold of him. The story is told by a narrator who, in a visionary dream, takes on Pernath's identity, so that dream, memory and reality merge. Pernath's friends and neighbours in the ghetto fill the tale, in which the Golem is rarely seen but felt.
