Synopsis

Set long before the other Trolle novels and away from Wlachkis, in an age when darkness still covers the face of the world and humans are only a distant rumour, the novel tells the dark story of the trolls' rise to power. The trolls of Akkem's tribe live in mountain caves, the winters are growing harsher and food is scarce, and the hunter Ruk finds another tribe dead of hunger and cold in its cave. In the deep of winter an unknown troll, Israk, arrives with his own tribe and plenty of fresh meat, promising a land where trolls will never go hungry again, with herds guarded only by weak creatures. Ruk and his fellow hunter Karn follow him but grow uneasy at his methods. Meanwhile the elf Deleiva, who fought for four years alongside the Keibos and the Eleitam against the dwarves who invaded her homeland, sets out to learn who destroyed two Eleitam settlements.
