Synopsis
In this 1975 novel, Sirius, a celestial being known as the Dog Star, is put on trial by a court of luminaries for the murder of a fellow being, a crime he insists he did not commit. He is found guilty and stripped of his powers, sentenced to lose the mysterious and powerful lost object called the Zoi and to live out a mortal life on Earth in the body of a dog, with the chance to earn back his true form only if he can recover the Zoi before his dog's lifetime ends. Reborn as a puppy, he is taken in and named Leo by a young girl called Kathleen, who lives in an unwelcoming household, and must search for the lost Zoi while adjusting to his new existence and the memories he retains of his former life among the stars.
