Synopsis

Dragon Harper is set about five hundred years after Pern's colonization, just before and during the opening of the Third Pass of Thread. Kindan, having taken up an apprenticeship at the Harper Hall, pursues his musical training while contending with a rival apprentice's bullying, a secret relationship he must keep hidden, and the arrival of the Harper Hall's first female apprentices after the Masterharper ends the long-standing ban on women harpers. These personal challenges unfold against the spread of a severe, influenza-like illness across Pern that forces the Weyrs into strict quarantine to protect their dragons and threatens the population at the worst possible moment, as Threadfall itself begins to return. The narrative also touches on how much of Pern's original off-world knowledge and records have been lost or degraded over the centuries since Landing.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragonriders of Pern: the Third Pass era): 5 novels co-credited 'Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey' on their original editions, set in the 'Third Pass' prequel era (~500 AL). Sky Dragons (2012) was completed and published after Anne McCaffrey's November 2011 death but retains joint credit as the concluding volume of a collaborative project begun while she was alive.
